Current Crop Of Jump Horses Could Match Kauto Star

kauto star

Ever since the retirement of legendary racehorse Kauto Star, who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice (2007 and 2009), there have been many in the sport who have been wondering if there is any horse that could canter into its hoovesteps.

Of course, at the time, we were all treated to an incredible rivalry between him and Denman, who often went nose to nose, providing racegoers with some incredible action, while Imperial Commander also had its day.

There has been much intrigue since these days about whether there are any horses that could provide as much excitement and, with the new jump season already underway, we take a look at some that might just rise to the challenge.

Il Est Francais

The five-year-old, who is based in France, has drawn a number of comparisons to ‘Kauto’, especially by prominent trainer Paul Nicholls, who would probably love to bring it under his stable. Meanwhile, the horse is trained by Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm and we may see a surprise appearance from it in the 2025 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Constitution Hill

A horse with a very bright future. Undefeated from seven starts, the six-year-old is arguably the jewel in trainer, Nicky Henderson’s crown, who could do with a more positive Cheltenham Festival than last season. Although he is currently jumping hurdles, the expectation is that he could transition to fences and really demonstrate his ability to showcase his Kauto qualities.

Gaelic Warrior

Trainer Willie Mullins has high hopes for Gaelic Warrior who is another that could emulate Kauto. Blessed with excellent stamina and versatility, the five-year-old has excelled over the last year, he is certainly one to watch.

Stage Star

The first (Paul) Nicholls horse on our list, Stage Star shown its class in superior fashion over the last couple of years, with the seven-year-old demonstrating significant consistency during elite races, such as the Turners Novices’ Chase (Cheltenham 2023) and theCharlie Hall Chase in 2024, of which he both won. He could very well become a future Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup favourite over the next couple of years and is definitely a horse to keep an eye on.

Marine National

Perhaps one from left-field, the Barry Connell trained six-year-old has shown that he could be a major contender in the novice chase divisions over the course of the next couple of years with substantial potential for to earn Grade 1 triumphs. Already a winner in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, Marine Nationale could provide some great entertainment in years to come.

Corbetts Cross

Trained by Emmet Mullins, this is another highly talented horse that could easily develop into one of the best chasers over the next few years and exhibit similar qualities to Kauto. Already having showcased great versatility as well as maturity over the hurdles, the six-year-old is absolutely one to watch in the novice chases.
